Donizetti’s light-hearted comedy shows that the most important battle is the one for the heart. Marie is a fearless orphan raised by a regiment of the French Army. Her unusual upbringing is challenged when a wealthy woman, claiming to be her aunt, arrives to make Marie a proper lady, complete with a new admirer looking for her hand in marriage. But Marie has fallen in love with a young man named Tonio, an enemy of the French regiment. What will Marie choose, love or duty?
